Introduction to wilderness navigation


Designed for those who have been out and about on their own adventures, but would like a little more knowledge and confidence when it comes to navigation.This one day course follows the following topics:

  • Maps and navigation equipment
  • Grid references
  • Map orientation
  • Planning and following a route
  • Relating the map to the land and vice versa
  • Compass bearings



Requires min of 2 participants for course to run. Max of 5 participants.

Is it for me?

  • A level of fitness for all day walking, on rough ground, in hills and a willingness to learn
  • Minimum age of 16


  • Meet at 09:00 in Killin at the Maclaren Hall car park
  • Discuss plan for the day
  • Arrange vehicle shuttles as required
  • Start on the hill and cover the overview aims
  • Lunch will be on the hill side
  • Finish on the hill around 16:30, review the day
