River Spey Expedition

This 2 day micro-expedition is a perfect for aspiring adventures looking for excitement, scenery and a new experience. Our journey is dominated with views of the Cairngorms, navigating the twists and turns of the river and spotting jumping salmon. As we head downstream there are few easier rapids to negotiate, providing great sport! We will spend our evening camped out on the shore of Spey enjoying great company and food!

What’s included

Is it for me?

  • Each day we will be journeying downsteam, so the paddling will feel relxed. However at times we will have to navigate a rapid, which means dynamic and confident paddling is required (coaching will be provided)
  • Packrafts are extremely stable, but the very nature of navigating rivers means we cannot gaurantee a capsize won’t happen, and this is okay! However you should be a confident swimmer in case this happens
  • Expect to be on the water for 5-6 hours each day
  • Although not essential, having packrafted or kayaked before will make the journey feel easier  
  • Minimum age of 18 (parties with under 18s are welcome to make a private booking)

Itinerary

Day 1
  • Meet at 09:30, Aviemore, at the car park by the river, opposite to The Old Bridge Inn
  • Before we get on the water you will meet your guide and the rest of the team. We will spend some time getting to know each other, reviewing and packing up our kit
  • Before we head downstream we will cover important skills for the river and spend some time getting comfortable in the packrafts
  • Half way through our journey we will stop and enjoy lunch on the river bank
  • At camp your guide will show you how to pitch your tent and prepare dinner for you
Day 2
  • Day 2 starts with breakfast on the river bank
  • We will continue our journey downstream, enjoying the amazing scenery of the Spey valley
  • Just before the finish, we negotiate one last rapid, the biggest of the trip and named the Washing Machine! Paddle or easy portage are possible
  • We finish our journey at Blacksboat, where we are collected by our shuttle bus to Aviemore train station (eta 18:00) and will say our goodbyes
